Richard Tanaka began his career as a ceramic artist in 1972, completing Ceramics I & II at Humber College and opening his first studio “Elements of Earth” on Yonge St. in Toronto. He also spent five years working as a clay technician for Ron Roy.

He then went on to broaden his design background by studying furniture design at George Brown College and Log House Building at Fanshaw College. By 1978 he decided to move west and purchased six acres of land in Salmon Arm, BC where he designed and hand-built a house and potter’s studio.

Presently, Richard resides in Vancouver, BC. In July of 2009 he taught a workshop at the Shadbolt Centre, becoming one of their monthly Artists in Residence. He is always on the look-out for new creative endeavours and opportunities to share his love of ceramics with others.
